Lessing really evokes the languorous, luxuriating nature of their engagement with academic political ideas, which appears to entirely contradict the same political ideas they espouse. ![]() The characters are enjoyable, but in the sense that it is enjoyable to dislike them. It created such a sense of youthful glamour and freedom, borne out of what appeared to be a real ignorance of the actual situation in Africa, mixed with a high-minded desire to fight for equality. ![]() I was fascinated by this retelling of the story. We quickly realise this story is strongly rooted in Anna's own experiences in Africa during the war. ![]() In the first (the black notebook), Anna focuses on her literary life as the author of a best-selling novel "Frontiers of War" - mostly the conversations she has with producers wishing to adapt it for television or film, and then a detailed retelling the story of the novel itself. These notebooks are all first-person accounts of Anna's life in some format or another. After "Free Women", the narrative moved into the notebooks, which are presented very much as working documents, with the scribbles and crossings-out described as much as what was left written on the page. ![]()
